How a French cake platter tradition found it's way to Australia
Bienvenue à Shop Avenir!
That means Welcome to Shop Avenir! Avenir means “future” in French, and our vision is to create a future where inspiration, creativity, and lifestyle come together.
We’re a small Aussie family business, proudly born and based in beautiful Melbourne.
Why the French connection? How we discovered the plat diviseur
About 20 years ago, we set ourselves a bucket-list goal: to one day travel to France and follow the legendary Tour de France — one of the most prestigious and gruelling endurance events in the world.
Every July, we've been captivated by the race on TV: the breathtaking scenery, the athletes' determination, the strategy, the struggle, and the triumph. It's endlessly inspirational.
Our dream of reaching the Tour de France led us to start learning the French language. Bonjour! Along the way in our language learning journey, we discovered something truly unique and special within French cuisine culture: the plat diviseur — a beautifully designed round cake platter with a built-in slicing guide, used for generations across French households to cut cakes, tarts, and quiches into perfectly equal portions.
Why Australia needed its own cake platter with a slicing guide
When we went looking for a plat diviseur here in Australia, we couldn't find one anywhere. Cake stands and serving platters were everywhere — but nothing with that clever slicing guide built right into the design. It seemed like such an obvious gap.
So we decided to design and manufacture our own: a white ceramic round cake platter that brings the elegance of a traditional French cake serving plate together with the practicality of a numbered slicing guide. That's how Shop Avenir was born.
Welcome to the Shop Avenir family
Whether you're using it as a cake plate for birthdays, a serving plate for afternoon tea, or simply as a beautiful round platter on your dining table, we hope our plat diviseur brings a little more ease — and a lot more joy — to your gatherings.
We hope you enjoy using your plat diviseur cake platter with buit-in slicing guide as much as we enjoyed bringing this beautiful French tradition into Aussie homes.
